Who is James? What can we learn from him? What can we learn from the most important family that has ever existed? In this series, we will dive deep into the book of James and see what God has for us and how we can apply to our lives now.

Today’s Key Scriptures:

James 3:13-18 ESV

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Two Cultures that our Temper can bring:

James 3:14-16 Passion

14 But if there is bitter jealousy or competition hiding in your heart, then don’t deny it and try to compensate for it by boasting and being phony.

15 For that has nothing to do with God’s heavenly wisdom but can best be described as the wisdom of this world, both selfish and devilish.

16 So wherever jealousy and selfishness are uncovered, you will also find many troubles and every kind of meanness.

  • Hell’s Culture = Earthly, unspiritual, demonic (cursing)

A) Bitter Jealousy/Envy

B) Selfish Ambition (“competition hiding in your heart…”)

  • Selfish ambition misses God’s will, God’s timing, and God’s heart.

C) Boast

2 Corinthians 10:17-18 Passion

For: The one who boasts must boast in the Lord. So let’s be clear. To have the Lord’s approval and commendation is of greater value than bragging about oneself.

D) Fake (“False to the Truth”)

1 John 2:4 Passion

If someone claims, “I have come to know God by experience,” yet doesn’t keep God’s commands, he is a phony and the truth finds no place in him.

E) Disorder (“Many Troubles”)

F) Evilness (“Meanness”, “and every vile practice”)

Revelation 12:7-10 Passion

Then a terrible war broke out in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the great dragon. The dragon and his angels fought back. But the dragon did not have the power to win and they could not regain their place in heaven. So the great dragon was thrown down once and for all. He was the serpent, the ancient snake called the devil, and Satan, who deceives the whole earth. He was cast down into the earth and his angels along with him.

Then I heard a triumphant voice in heaven proclaiming:

“Now salvation and power are set in place, and the kingdom reign of our God and the ruling authority of his Anointed One are established. For the accuser of our brothers and sisters, who relentlessly accused them day and night before our God, has now been defeated—cast out once and for all!

James 3:17-18 Passion

17 But the wisdom from above is always pure, filled with peace, considerate and teachable. It is filled with love and never displays prejudice or hypocrisy in any form

18 and it always bears the beautiful harvest of righteousness! Good seeds of wisdom’s fruit will be planted with peaceful acts by those who cherish making peace.

A) Pure

Matthew 5:8 Passion

“What bliss you experience when your heart is pure! For then your eyes will open to see more and more of God.

B) Peaceful (a loving peace)

Matthew 5:9 Passion

“How blessed you are when you make peace! For then you will be recognized as a true child of God.

C) Gentle (“considerate”)

Matthew 5:5 Passion

“What blessing comes to you when gentleness lives in you! For you will inherit the earth.

Numbers 12:3 NKJV

(Now the man Moses was very humble, more than all men who were on the face of the earth.)

Matthew 11:29 Passion

Simply join your life with mine. Learn my ways and you’ll discover that I’m gentle, humble, easy to please. You will find refreshment and rest in me.

Matthew 5:5 NLT

God blesses those who are humble, for they will inherit the whole earth.

D) Teachable (“open to reason”)

Matthew 5:4 NLT

God blesses those who mourn, for they will be comforted.

E) Full of Mercy & Good Fruits (“Filled with love”)

Matthew 5:7 Passion

“How satisfied you are when you demonstrate tender mercy! For tender mercy will be demonstrated to you.

  • Fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5)

F) Impartial (“never prejudice”)

G) Sincere (“no hypocrisy”)

Matthew 5:3 NIV

“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

H) Produces Righteousness

V. 18 ESV And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.

Matthew 5:6 Passion

“How enriched you are when you crave righteousness! For you will be surrounded with fruitfulness.

  • We are called to live in His culture.

  • What is the culture of your heart?
  • What is the culture of your home?
  • What is the culture of your relationships?
