JAMES: FAITH THAT WORKS

PART 2: TEMPTATIONS

Summary:

Who is James? What can we learn from him? What can we learn from the most important family that has ever existed? In this series, we will dive deep into the book of James and see what God has for us and how we can apply to our lives now.

Today’s Key Scriptures:

James 1:9-18 ESV

9 Let the lowly brother boast in his exaltation, 10 and the rich in his humiliation, because like a flower of the grass he will pass away. 11 For the sun rises with its scorching heat and withers the grass; its flower falls, and its beauty perishes. So also will the rich man fade away in the midst of his pursuits.

12 Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him.

13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one.

14 But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire.

15 Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death.

16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brothers.

17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.

18 Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures.

Three Things About Joy When It Comes to Temptations:

#1) JOY CAN’T BE FOUND IN YOUR STUFF

James 1:9-11 Passion

9 The believer who is poor still has reasons to boast, for he has been placed on high. 10 But those who are rich should boast in how God has brought them low and humbled them, for all their earthly glory will one day fade away like a wildflower in the meadow. 11 For as the scorching heat of the sun causes the petals of the wildflower to fall off and lose its appearance of beauty, so the rich in the midst of their pursuit of wealth will wither away.

Proverbs 13:11 NLT

Wealth from get-rich-quick schemes quickly disappears; wealth from hard work grows over time.

4 Biblical Categories:

  1. Godly Poor
  2. Godly Rich
  3. Ungodly Poor
  4. Ungodly Rich

2 Corinthians 8:9 Passion

For you have experienced the extravagant grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that although he was infinitely rich, he impoverished himself for our sake, so that by his poverty, we could become rich beyond measure.

1 Samuel 16:7 NLT

But the LORD said to Samuel, “Don’t judge by his appearance or height, for I have rejected him. The LORD doesn’t see things the way you see them. People judge by outward appearance, but the LORD looks at the heart.”

#2) JOY CAN’T BE FOUND IN YOUR SIN

James 1:12-15 Passion

12 If your faith remains strong, even while surrounded by life’s difficulties, you will continue to experience the untold blessings of God! True happiness comes as you pass the test with faith, and receive the victorious crown of life promised to every lover of God!

13 When you are tempted don’t ever say, “God is tempting me,” for God is incapable of being tempted by evil and he is never the source of temptation. 14 Instead it is each person’s own desires and thoughts that drag them into evil and lure them away into darkness. 15 Evil desires give birth to evil actions. And when sin is fully mature it can murder you!

How Do You FAIL A Test

  1. Surrender to sin
  2. Blame God

  • Sin defies God, damages me, & damages others.

How Do You PASS A Test

  1. See Temptation as a test and not as a sin.
  2. Choose the desire of the Spirit and not the flesh.

  • God blesses a place NOT a person.

#3) JOY COMES FROM GOD

  • Joy comes down from God more than it comes up from life.

James 1:16 Passion

So my friends, don’t be fooled by your own desires!

Jeremiah 17:9-10 Message

"The heart is hopelessly dark and deceitful, a puzzle that no one can figure out.

But I, GOD, search the heart and examine the mind. I get to the heart of the human. I get to the root of things. I treat them as they really are, not as they pretend to be."

Ecclesiastes 11:9 Message

You who are young, make the most of your youth. Relish your youthful vigor. Follow the impulses of your heart. If something looks good to you, pursue it. But know also that not just anything goes; You have to answer to God for every last bit of it.

Proverbs 4:23 Passion

So above all, guard the affections of your heart, for they affect all that you are. Pay attention to the welfare of your innermost being, for from there flows the wellspring of life.

James 1:17 Passion

Every gift God freely gives us is good and perfect, streaming down from the Father of lights, who shines from the heavens with no hidden shadow or darkness and is never subject to change.

CONCLUSION

James 1:18 Passion

God was delighted to give us birth by the truth of his infallible Word so that we would fulfill his chosen destiny for us and become the favorite ones [firstfruits] out of all his creation!
